Subic Bay is the Philippines major Freeport, and is located next to Olongapo, Zimbales. The former U.S. Naval base has a world class infrastructure and facilities, and has become one of the Philippines most successful duty free industrial and commercial areas. Although the economic free port zone does have world class facilities and hotels such as Subic Bay International and Subic Bay Resort and Casino, where guests can play golf on the former U.S.Naval bases 18 hole course or enjoy one of a multitude of water sports, the main tourist destination lies away from Subic free port itself.
At the far end of the Free port you go around the coast road to Barrio Barreto and Baloy Beach area. There you will find numerous hotels and restaurants as well as beach resorts and hotels. Subic is a destination easily accessible from both Manila and Angeles City and is popular with tourists of those destinations to visit for a break on the coast. It is also a good scuba dive spot with many WWII wrecks to explore.

There are a few private "public" beaches that are looked after and maintained by the local Barangay and for a small daily fee you can visit one of these. Water sports such as water skiing, para-sailing, and jet skis are available. Jungle Treks can also be arranged. At Beeline we have a Dive Shop operator, on Baloy Beach who can arrange all water sport activities with you and scuba diving trips. Even a beach BBQ can be arranged with giant prawns and local fish... (See Johan Scuba Dive in our Scuba section).
How to get there.
Subic can be reached from Manila/Angeles by Swagman Fly the Bus or by private taxi through Beeline from any departure point in Manila or Angeles. There are also local buses. It is approximately a 2 hour drive from either departure point. It is probably the nearest coastal resort to Angeles, and a popular destination. The area is certainly not what it used to be back in the old U.S.Naval days and although there are numerous resorts and hotels, the standards of some are not as high as beeline travel would recommend. We have selected a few that we have visited and inspected or had good feedback from. AS ALWAYS if any of our clients know of an additional hotel that they feel we should recommend please let us know, by email.
Scuba Diving.
Scuba Diving is popular in Subic with many World War Two wrecks to explore. Try our recommended scuba dive shop in Subic. Johan De Sadleir. His details can be found on our Scuba Diving pages. There are also several bars and night clubs going back to the old Naval base days, to explore at night. Plenty of nostalgia and history in Subic.

This budget style accommodation is ideal for those looking for an inexpensive, clean and friendly place to stay. Rooms are with or without A/C the Standard rooms are very clean but, very basic. A fair sized and comfortable bed with Cable TV at the bottom of the bed. Just enough room to squeeze pass through to a clean and respectable bathroom with shower (hot water heater) There is a small place to store clothes and linen as well. Coffee making facilities are in the room and complimentary which I thought was a real nice touch for such a small hotel.
There is a fridge with a small selection of mineral water, soft drinks and SM. The hotel rooms are at the back of a small bar (T Rose Bar) and is located on the main road through Barrio Barreto and almost opposite the By the Sea hotel. There are snacks available for guests at the bar. But, no restaurant service. Just 2 minutes down is Drydens hotel which has a VERY GOOD restaurant whether or not you are a guest.

Located right on the sea front. By the sea is budget type accommodation. They have many rooms and have a resort type complex with different types of rooms in different areas. The regular rooms are fan only and sometimes have no hot water by all reports. So go for one of the better standard of rooms. There is a restaurant and main reception area at the front entrance off the main road.

Probably our RECOMMENDED HOTEL of the area along with the Zanzibar. The Suzuki located right on the sea front and has 22 good clean and comfortable rooms, with mini bar, cable TV, AC and hot and cold water, bathtubs. The sea view rooms are nice but all rooms are of similar standard the cost reflects the view and their location at the hotel.
The Suzuki is a Japanese run hotel, but very world wide friendly. Tourists from all nations are most welcome. The restaurant facilities are excellent and over look the sea. The hotel also arranges boa trips and other water sports activities.

Zanzibar Hotel - DISCONTINUED

Another highly recommended hotel. Located off Baloy Beach opposite heavens resort. this multi level building can be seen from a distance, and has some great views across the Bay at sunset.
The hotel try's to cater for both business minded and tourist alike. The rooms are spacious and comfortable. It has some excellent hotel grounds and a nice swimming pool and children's pool. Excellent restaurant and business facilities. All rooms come with cable TV, AC and mini bar.
They also have beach cottages for rent, but tourists are not advised to use these for overnight stays as security may be a problem as they are located on the beach away from the main hotel. Both the Zanzibar and Suzuki are ideal for those looking for something a little better than budget styled accommodations, and are amongst the best in the area.
